Perry was born in Chicago to two actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. The role of Jackie Harris was played by her mom in both of her two appearances on Roseanne. However, her parents did not let her perform until she was an adult, for fear of the impact stress might have on their daughter. Perry claimed that she was too nervous to be an actor during high school, but started acting in the theater at Northwestern University as a way to meet new people after she transferred from Boston University. Perry went on to New York, where she got small roles on shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The feeling of homesickness brought Perry home to California, where theater jobs were in demand. Perry performed with her mom in The Other Place at Broadway the previous year. In 2015, she was a part of her father as well as Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning film Anna Christie at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. In 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's crime thriller The Family. In 2017, Perry had an appearance on ABC's political thriller Scandal with her father. The character she played was an older Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off series from CBS's The Big Bang Theory was another younger portrayal of her mother. The character was picked via auditions though she had a close association with it.
